Canoe Trip #1

Here's a few photos of our first canoe trip in our new canoe.

Location: French Creek from French Creek, NY to Wattsburg, PA (Leg #1)
Date: April 14, 2002
Conditions: 60 degrees, rain with thunderstorms, terrible weather.
Flow Rate: 1300, average for this day over past 26 years, 200! Little did we know...

Getting ready
Our new canoe (our first). It's an Old Town Discovery 169.
Me, Jen, Jimmy and Adam (her brothers)
Let's go
This is about when it started to rain.
One of MANY problems
While dodging this tree across the creek, Adam jumped out and seriously cut his big toe. Lots of blood was pooling in his sandal. Being the unprepared morons we of course had no first aid kit. So I gave him a sock from my dry bag to act as a band-aid.
Another major problem was trying to get Jimmy's cigarette's lit with rain soaked matches and lighters. Half of the trip was spent trying to light him a smoke.
The Dump!
The brothers almost dumping and Jen after we dumped. We almost got impaled by the bigger tree to the right. As we leaned to avoid the tree everything went to the right and the creek decided to play games with us. The water was soooo cold, over our head, really fast and of course our life jackets were firmly strapped to the thwarts. Luckily we got hung up on the smaller tree seen between Jen and Adam and easily climbed over the canoe (no, it doesn't sink when turtled just like the manufacturer claims) across the tree to the bank. Lunch was soaked and she lost her paddle (later recovered, mine was trapped under the canoe). So we learned we weren't immune to the nasty river dump. We were already soaked because it rained the whole trip complete with some nice heavy downpours. But, it was fun and we'll be back there as soon as possible.
